Those qualities are exactly why we’re proud to celebrate Thomas “Tom” Mendenhall, who was recently named a Top 5 Finalist for the DMC Insurance Driver of the Year Award.
Being recognized as one of only five finalists for this national award is an incredible accomplishment and reflects the professionalism, leadership, and dedication Tom demonstrates every day.
A Career Built on Teaching
Long before climbing into the driver’s seat of a tractor-trailer, Tom spent more than three decades teaching computer technology at both the high school and community college levels. His passion for educating others made a lasting impact on countless students throughout his 31-year career.
When retirement arrived, Tom wasn’t ready to slow down. Instead, he returned to his transportation roots and began a second career as a professional truck driver—a career he often says he’s wanted since childhood. What started as a part-time opportunity quickly turned into a rewarding new chapter.
Today, Tom continues to combine both careers by sharing his knowledge with others every chance he gets.
Making a Difference Beyond the Driver’s Seat
As a member of Cargo Transporters’ Short Haul fleet, Tom has become an invaluable resource for new employees entering the trucking industry.
Whether he’s assisting with Driver Orientation, teaching new hires how to use our onboard technology, or helping fellow drivers navigate everyday challenges, Tom approaches every interaction with patience, professionalism, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.
His unique ability to simplify complex topics and make new drivers feel confident has earned him the respect of teammates across the company. New employees consistently leave orientation with a greater appreciation for the profession thanks to Tom’s guidance, while experienced drivers know they can always count on him for advice or support.
A Well-Deserved Recognition
This isn’t the first time Tom’s commitment to excellence has been recognized. In September 2024, he was named Cargo Transporters’ Driver of the Month for his outstanding work ethic, dedication to safety, and positive influence on those around him.
Now, being selected as a Top 5 Finalist for DMC Insurance Driver of the Year places him among some of the nation’s finest professional drivers—a recognition that speaks not only to his driving record, but to the character, leadership, and professionalism he demonstrates every day.
